ifeedformula: My first DNF

So this morning I decided that, since it was really nice out and kinda warm, I'd go geocaching after I dropped J at school. Found one that's about 3 miles or so from my house and I decided, oh what the hell. I'll save the gas and just walk there.
Found the place alright..but I didn't find the cache. Oh well. Better luck next time. Took me about 45 min to walk there, spent another 15 min or so assing around looking for the cache and started back. I went back a different way then I'd come and it took me nearly an hour to walk back. I think round trip I walked nearly 5 1/2 miles, which I've never done in one stretch before. Over uncertain ground at times, too. Including having to walk across a concrete dam thingie which had stinking disgusting water running over the top. Eew.

If it's nice out tomorrow, I might try and find another cache that's a little bit closer. According to the geocaching site, it's less than a half mile from here. I've figured out how to navigate with my Geko and I've dropped a waypoint so I can find my way back home and don't get  lost. I almost thought I was lost this morning because the way it told me to come back was NOT the way I'd come and I wasn't entirely sure where I was for a few minutes

ifeedformula: A walk to remember

So I did my research and found there was a cache not too far from my son's school. I decided to try and find it this morning after I dropped him off.
Being a 1/1.5 or so it was fairly easy to find right where the hider (cacher???) said it would be. I think I'm getting addicted, although I"ll probably never do more than a 1 or a 2 that's in an urban area. There are TONS of caches in/around my small town so there should be enough to keep me busy for awhile yet.

li_kao: Travelin' Bugs

I received a Unite for Diabetes travel bug in the mail last week, and I just launched it out today in a cache near my house that I hadn't yet logged for some reason. I'd not heard of Pontianak, Indonesia before, but I now know that it's the capital of West Kalimantan. I noticed that the closest geocaches are just over 100 miles from the city, but maybe someone in the area will establish the first geocache in Pontianak with this travel bug!

I did my usual yearly donation to the American Diabetes Association this month, and decided to go for something a little different for this coming year. I created a travel bug in honor of a young boy I know who was diagnosed with type I diabetes two years ago this day. Its goal is to travel to all 50 states, and I'm pledging $10 for the first time it's logged into a cache in each state. I've had really spotty luck with travel bugs, with several going AWOL, and I'm hoping that this one has a better run.

Here's hoping.

0ccam: vermin question

To those reading this:

Do you slack off your geocaching during the buggy season?

Do you change habits at all (other than slathering on the bug repellent)?

What have you found to be the BEST chigger preventative, other than abstinence?

What have you found to be the BEST chigger (or other bite) remedy?

Thank you in advance for your replies.

0ccam: DFW area: Save this one for a bad day!

GCNQV5 -- I'd recommend saving this one to find if you've had a bad day full of DNFs.

0ccam: I'm new....

kaon introduced me to geocaching last month.

Now I have a few finds under my belt, and a GPSr arriving Thursday.

I have four caches picked out to go find during lunchtimes (hopefully with kaon) the rest of this week....

Same username on Geocaching.com as here...
